Ice climbing grip tape?

Anyone have any luck with various types of grip tape for leashless ice climbing? I have a friend who used skateboard grip tape but it tends to come off when it gets wet/icy. I have heard recommendations for “friction tape”, which is used by hockey players, and self-amalgamating tape. If anyone has any experience, positive or negative, with any of these, it would be good to hear.

Have you tried ordinary medical adhesive tape? I used to use that on my wooden ice axe in days gone by. My wife uses “athletic tape” on her garden tools and I vaguly remember using that on an ice axe, but not for true vert. Ice climbing. Probably not much help, but just some thoughts I thought I would throw out.
