 A Circle of Cats

A Circle of Cats

$198.85

Lillian is an orphan who lives with her aunt on a homestead miles from anyone, surrounded by uncharted forest. She wanders the woods, chasing squirrels and rabbits and climbing trees. Free-spirited and independent Lillian is a kindred spirit to the many wild cats who gather around the ancient beech tree. One day, while she is under the beech, Lillian is bitten by a poisonous snake. The cats refuse to let her die, and use their magic to turn her into one of their own. How she becomes a girl again is a lyrical, original folktale. Set in the countryside north of de Lint’s fictional Newford, with some of the same characters as the duo’s recent, acclaimed Seven Wild Sisters, A Circle of Cats is the long-awaited first picture book by long-time friends Charles de Lint and Charles Vess, whose masterful art is as magical as the story.

An engaging mix of the serious and the playful, and Fenton writes with a lightness of touch perfectly suited to the subject. –Alexander Urquhart, T he Times Literary Supplement Forget structure. Forget trees, shrubs, and perennials. As James Fenton writes, This is not a book about huge projects. It is about thinking your way toward the essential flower garden, by the most traditional of routes: planting some seeds and seeing how they grow. In this light hearted, instructive, original game of lists, Fenton selects one hundred plants he would choose to grow from seed. Flowers for color, size, and exotic interest; herbs and meadow flowers; climbing vines, tropical species–Fenton describes readily available varieties, and tells how to acquire and grow them. Here is a happy, stylish, unpretentious, and thought-provoking gardening book that will beguile and inspire both novice and expert alike.
