What the person above me is speaking about is called sport climbing, that is when the bolts are provided for you. What you are asking is Trad climbing (or traditional) you use a piece of protection, nowadays it is usually a cam, which is a spring loaded active piece of protection. You also have nuts, a piece of passive protection since there are no moving parts, such as a hex. Both types of protection have stems or slings that come out of them where you clip a quickdraw, which is a sewn piece of webbing or some other material such as spectra that holds 2 carabiners. 1 carabiner clips to the piece of protection and the other is clipped to the rope to allow the rope to run through it.
