Climbing Mt. Shasta
Anyone climbed Mt. Shasta recently ? 12/19/07?
Thinking of climbing Shasta soon, was wondering what the conditions are ? Lots of snow or not so much ? I will climb up ski down, I wanna know how far down I can ski ? One day climb, just looking for any recent insight.
It varies year to year…last year the southern Cascades didn’t get a lot of snow, so the mountain was pretty much out of condition for climbing fairly early in the season (early to mid July). If you do the Avalanche Gulch route (the most common), you might be able to ski all the way from the top of the Gulch (below Red Banks) all the way to the parking lot..or you could not ski at all. It all depends on the snow pack for this year. A lot of people that do ski mountaineering try the peak from Hidden Valley to the west of Avalanche Gulch. This is a nice alternative with MUCH less activity. I was there last May and it was nice (my picture on my user id is taken from this trip just below the Shasta-Shastina summit).
