Patagonia Clothing Is for the Great Outdoors

Patagonia clothing is a relatively small American apparel company that makes clothing for a number of outdoor activities like rock climbing, surfing and skiing. It was established in Ventura, California almost four decades ago in 1972 by Yvon Chouinard. In the time since then, this small company has been a well kept secret among sports persons and the clothing and accessories that Patagonia makes are some of the most widely worn by sporting and nature enthusiasts. It is easy to spot Patagonia’s pieces of clothing from afar by their distinctive logo that features the silhouette of the Cero Fitzroy Mountains that lie in southern Argentina and Chile, from which Patagonia takes its name.

The Patagonia brand has only recently started making clothing with a broader appeal to anyone who loves the outdoors and spends a considerable time in them. For decades Patagonia made clothing targeted at people who spent a lot of time doing a number of very specific activities like skiing, camping, surfing, hiking, rock climbing and Nordic skiing. With these people Patagonia has made a name for itself with a line of clothing that has a base layer of material called Capilene.

The Patagonia company has also recently taken a very positive approach to surfing with two major initiatives that benefit both customers and employees. For its customers Patagonia has in the last few years started making a collection targeted at surfers. Patagonia clothing has long been said to be one of the coolest places to work in the industry due to its culture and its flex timing. It now takes that even further with company employees getting time off to go surfing if they so choose.

Another reason that true outdoor enthusiasts love Patagonia as a company besides the amazingingly wide range of high quality clothing is due to its true concern for the environment. For a couple of decades now Patagonia has been a major contributor to environmental groups in the US as well as abroad. Patagonia commits to environmental groups one percent of its total sales in a fiscal year or ten percent of its overall profits, whichever is higher. The company has donated money to the tune of twenty five million US Dollars to over one thousand organisations over the past two decades or more. People who buy Patagonia’s often pricey clothing can feel better about their purchases with the knowledge that a small part of their money spent is going towards protecting the great outdoors that they are so passionate about.

This gorgeous, historic, and inspiring new film from director & surfer Chris Malloy and his collective at Woodshed Films, documents the adventures of surfer and climber Jeff Johnson as he retraces the epic 1968 journey of his heroes Yvon Chouinard (rock climbing legend and founder of Ventura-based Patagonia) and Doug Tompkins, on which they drove, mountain climbed and surfed their way to Chilean Patagonia. Along the way, Jeff encounters big surf, snowy mountains, a dangerous ocean crossing, pulp mills, cowboys, dams and more on his way to climb Cerro Corcovado in Patagonia. Jeff’s life takes a turn when he meets up in a rainy hut with Chouinard and Tompkins who, once driven purely by a love of climbing and surfing, now value above all the experience of raw nature and have come to Patagonia to help use their influence to help protect it. The film is a road trip movie, a historic document, and an environmental call to arms, but mostly a meditation on what matters most in life ?staying true to one’s own vision and values.

Let My People Go Surfing

The founder and owner of Patagonia, Inc., one of the world’s most inspiring companies, relates his story and the core philosophies that have sustained his company, renowned for its maverick innovation and long-term responsibility to the environment. From the Publisher:Whether you care about adventure sports, the fate of the natural world, or pure brand maintenance and business success, Patagonia, Inc. is one of the earth’s most interesting and inspiring companies. For almost forty years, its reputation for unsurpassed high quality, maverick innovation, and long-term environmental responsibility has put it in a class by itself. And everything flows from Patagonia’s founder, Yvon Chouinard.Chouinard’s creation myth is now an American business legend. As a child, he moved with his father, a French Canadian blacksmith, and the rest of his family to Southern California in the 1950s with little English and less money. He escaped into mountain climbing as a teenager and by his early twenties was among the best climbers in America, making famous first ascents of a number of notorious faces. When he decided he could make better climbing tools himself for less money and when his fellow climbers agreed and clamored for more, a way of life became a business. Some forty years later, Yvon Chouinard still summits peaks around the world (though he now spends more time surfing). Patagonia still makes exceptionally high-quality things, only it now earns more than $250 million a year from worldwide sales, and Chouinard is able to leverage his concern for the natural settings he’s spent a lifetime enjoying. His resolve to minimize Patagonia’s impact on the environment has led the company to make its famous fleeces out of recycled soda bottles and to donate at least 1 percent of its revenue each year to environmental causes, among many other things. In Let My People Go Surfing, Yvon Chouinard relates his and his company’s story and the core philosophies that hav
