Making the most of holidays in Las Vegas

The bright lights of Las Vegas are like an oasis in the Nevada desert. Every weekend, residents from neighbouring states crowd in to forget their cares and splash money on the city’s array of gambling opportunities, from casual slot machines in hotel corridors to professional poker tables. However, Las Vegas isn’t simply the playground of American revellers. Rich tourists have flocked to the city in droves hoping to enjoy a dose of its relaxed gambling laws and atmosphere of free-flowing fun. In fact, it’s not uncommon for visitors in Vegas to refuse to leave their hotel’s casino for days on end, continually betting money on games and waiting for a huge lucky payout.

If you do plan on leaving your hotel, the sheer number of casinos in Las Vegas means that you’ll always have the choice of playing in different surroundings. One of the most famous locations is the iconic Bellagio, whose impressive fountains put on a stunning display several times an hour. One rival to this show is Mirage’s “volcano” which puts on a spectacular light show every hour. Then there’s the MGM Grand where, in addition to its many gambling spots, you’ll find a Lion Habitat offering a close-up look at these ferocious big cats. And at the Mandalay Bay hotel, you’ll even find a shark reef that’s home to sharks, sea turtles and other fish.

But gambling in exotic surroundings isn’t the only thing to do in Las Vegas. There’s plenty of exciting entertainment on all-year-round that provide the perfect opportunity to unwind from a day spent at the poker table. Cirque du Soleil, a world-renowned circus arts company, are among the most popular, putting on a range of shows for both families and adults. Other favourites with visitors in Las Vegas include the Blue Man Group and Le Rêve, while magicians David Copperfield and Penn and Teller also draw in large crowds. However, holidaymakers planning to spend an evening or two at a show in Las Vegas should remember to book tickets in advance as performances may sell out.

Alternatively, if you want to get out of the city entirely, consider going rock climbing at nearby Red Rock Canyon. There are several routes for climbers to take so be sure to purchase a guidebook and choose the correct one, depending on your climbing experience and ability. A little further north, the Spring Mountains are a great place to go hiking for a day. If physical exertion is not your idea of relaxation, it’s easy to drive through these areas too and their scenic beauty is certainly worth a look, even if only from a car window. What’s more, drive 45 minutes east of Las Vegas to the border with Arizona and you’ll get an up-close look at the magnificent Hoover Dam, an icon of American history.

With so much going on in Las Vegas, you can be sure that you’ll never run out of activities on holiday here. Nevertheless, before booking Las Vegas flights and accommodation, make sure you thoroughly research the city’s legal regulations. For example, you have to be 21 years old to gamble, unlike in the UK where the legal age is 18. Always carry identification with you as officials may ask for proof of age at any time. Moreover, if you’re not an American citizen, you may be subject to a withholding tax if you win a large sun through gambling. However, it is possible to reclaim this by filling out the right government forms, which you should be able to obtain from the casino.
